About the Show

A chamber musical based on the tempestuous life of Adele Hugo, daughter of Victor Hugo, The Passion of Adele Hugo follows Adele across three continents as she relentlessly pursues her obsession with the rakish British soldier, Albert Pinson. Leaving her sheltered life on the Island of Gurnsey, Adele follows Pinson to Halifax, and ultimately Barbados, determined to either claim him for herself, or deny him happiness with any other.

Production History

The Passion of Adele Hugo was presented by Eastern Front Theatre at the Neptune Theatre Studio in Halifax in November 2011. The production was directed and designed by Scott Burke, with costumes by Adam MacKinnon and lighting by Leigh Ann Vardy. Lily Ling was the musical director. Heather Lewis and Hannah Burrows were the stage managers. The production featured the following cast: Amanda LeBlanc (Leopoldine/Mary/Josephine and others), Sara Farb (Adele), Martin Burt (Hugo/Colonel/O’Brien/Governor and others), Bruce Godfree (Pinson) and Sabryn Rock (Baa/Medium/Magician and others).

Awards

Eastern Front Theatre’s production of The Passion of Adele Hugo was nominated for seven Robert Merritt Awards, and won awards for the score and musical direction. The nominees were as follows:

  • David Overton: Outstanding New Play by a Nova Scotian Playwright
  • Sara Farb: Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
